Lost Title Florida

If you have a lost title Florida DMV may be holding it as an electronic title.
For example, when you buy a vehicle and transfer the title into your name, you are given one of three options to:

  • Print a fast paper title on the spot and take it with you
  • Mail the title to receive later
  • Make it an electronic title Florida “holds in the cloud” so you won’t lose it.

Also if you have a lost title Florida DMV could have it if you paid off a loan recently.  All vehicles that have financing automatically become “ELT” or Electronic Lien Titles.  The Department of Motor Vehicles holds the title ” in the cloud” until the loan is paid off and released by the lien-holder.  When the finance Company released the electronic lien they aren’t required to send you a paper title in FL.  They most likely left it as an electronic title Florida DMV could print later. (When YOU request a printed title).

Florida DMV Will Hold Electronic Title If Lien-Holder On Title Record

Did you pay off your loan? To print an electronic title Florida lienholders can take two weeks or more to give a release of lien.  Ask the lien-holder to tell their third party provider to release the electronic lien or ELT. The DMV will not accept the order to print the title until the lien gets released by the lienholder.  To find out more about Florida ELT Electronic Title and Lien Program visit their website

If your loan is not paid off and the lien-holder is still in business. You will need to contact the bank to make a payment arrangement to pay off your loan. DMV will not release the lien or print a paper title until the lien is satisfied by the bank.

Is the lienholder out of business?  To find out search Sunbiz.org for their current Business Record to see if the lienholder is an active Florida Business or not.   If not,  Contact us for our lien removal service if the electronic lien is five (5) years old or older.
